    Young Barley Grass

    Young Home Sprouted Barley Grass

ou can grow barley grass in almost the twinkling of an eye… : ) Growing barley grass is simple, lush… We use a little soil even though one can grow without. The naturally composted soil from my organic peelings contributes to thick, long growth. Here, the young barley grass forms dew at the tips. Barley grass has a wider blade than wheat… (more…)

    Jules Dervaes’ Urban Homesteading

    Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Jules Dervaes is an urban homesteader residing in Pasadena, California. His lush gardens, chickens, ducks and goats on less than 1/5th of an acre provide food for his family of 4. We can’t imagine anything better than growing your own, even within a major metropolis such as the Los Angeles basin and then eating it raw, fresh from the garden. Nicholas Reid & Joris Debeij have created one of the best videos we’ve seen illustrating the beauty, simplicity, animals and lifestyle of the Dervaes’ homestead.

Jules and family live a sustainable lifestyle right in the heart of suburbia. They make their own bio-gas, generate their own solar electricity while providing organic raw fruits and vegetables for the local community, restauranteurs and caterers. They have an extensive blog and website at http://urbanhomestead.org/.

Beautiful Imagery From the VideoThe Dervaes use a bio-intensive no-till mulching raised bed method without chemical pesticides. They also grow on multi levels and in containers. Their bountiful and beautiful landscaping is also edible.

They believe in using the ancient practices of gardening, and offer teaching and training through their website.

Additionally, they are developing their skills and crafts along with the old style of simple living, when neighbors were neighborly, came calling and shared produce, animal husbandry, friendship, comraderie, kinship and knowledge.

We see this as a truly inspired and idyllic way of living in America – a return to old fashioned values when independence and self sufficiency were prized, respected and upheld.

RECIPE :: Tomato Fauxtuna Nori Roll

    Saturday, May 14th, 2011

    Tomato Tuna Nori Roll

Tomato Tuna Nori Roll - This delicious little roll packs a tasty punch. Small and bitesized, this basic little veggie raw seaweed roll, using heirloom tomato as fauxtuna, is convenient, easy, fun to eat and simple to make. Tasty, too.

    Simplicity Recipe Ingredients
Raw nori, red beefy heirloom tomatoes, baby greens, wakame, sweet dates.

    Instructions
Fold raw organic nori sheets into quarters. On flat quarter, place a layer of fresh organic baby greens. Top with fresh heirloom tomato, drained and cut into “tuna” strips. Sprinkle with organic raw wakame bits, top with a bit of fresh date. Roll, and eat.

Note: If you can find red meaty heirloom tomatoes, all the better. Whatever tomato you use, drain the juice and use the meat. If you cut the tomato, toss with some wakame and refrigerate for 15 minutes, the natural sodium in the seaweed will help draw out the tomato juice. Use the drain tomato for a more “tuna-like” taste and feel. : )

    Tasty Addons

    Wasabi
    Minced Green Onion (a favorite)
    Sweet Pickled or Fermented Ginger
    Natural Organic Fermented Sauce
    Sesame Seeds
    Sprouted Radish or other Seed
Minced or chopped and moistened Dulse

This simple little recipe is more delicious than one might expect!

BEAUTIFUL BANNER – Inspirational “Knots” Prayer

    Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

Knots Poem and Prayer - The "Nots" Prayer
One of the Best Inspirational Banners

    The Poem…

THE “KNOTS” PRAYER – THE “NOTS” POEM

    Dear God,

    Please untie the knots
    that are in my mind,
    my heart and my life.

    Remove the have nots,
    the can nots
    and the do nots
    that I have
    in my mind.

    Erase the will nots,
    may nots,
    and might nots
    that find a home
    in my heart.

    Release me from
    the could nots,
    would nots
    and should nots
    that obstruct my life.

And most of all, dear God…

    I ask that you
    remove from my mind,
    my heart and my life…

    all of the am nots
    that I have allowed
    to hold me back,
    especially the thought
that I am not good enough.
